The Good Governance for Social Development and the Environment Institute (GSEI) was invited by the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs to jointly produce the articles on the concepts and experiences of sustainable development initiatives in Thailand.  These articles collected from numerous scholars and organizations around the world have been compiled in a publication called "Future Perfect" and distributed for the first time during the UN Conference on Environment and Development or Rio+20 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil during 20-22 June 2012. The GSEI’s article on “Climate change mitigation through oriental wisdom and human development” by Suthawan Sathirathai and Buntoon Sethasiroj was in p.26-29 of the "Future Perfect"

Aligning Trade and Climate Change Agendas in the Context of a “Green” Economy: An Asian Perspective

Alliance Workshop: “Living with Nature through Oriental Wisdom for Our Common Future”
The Good Governance for Social Development and the Environment Foundation (GSEI) in collaboration with IUCN
Asia Regional Office and supported by Thailand International Development Cooperation Agency (TICA) will be organizing a alliances workshop entitled “Living with Nature through Oriental Wisdom for Our Common Future”. The workshop will take place on October 7, 2008 during 18.30 hrs – 20.00 hrs. at Room 133, Barcelona International Convention Centre (CCIB) in the 4th IUCN Word Conservation Congress –Barcelona, Spain.
The objectives of the workshop are to facilitate an international brainstorming workshop, exchanging ideas and experiences about existing knowledge and local wisdom of environmental and natural resource management in Asian countries, and to build up international networks of policy-planning agencies, academic institutes and civil societies in order to promote the application of the alternative pathways based on Oriental Wisdom for sustainable development. The recommendations from the forum will be used to further develop Oriental Wisdom-based framework for environmental  and  natural resources management.

ASEAN offers ‘Oriental Wisdom’ as an alternative pathway to environmental and natural resource management for presentation at the IUCN World Conservation Congress 5-14 October, 2008, in Barcelona, Spain.

IUCN Mangrove Ambassador tours tsunami affected areas in Thailand
Thanpuying Dr.Suthawan Sathirathai, Mangrove Ambassador for IUCN in Thailand, toured Koh Phra Thong island and tsunami-affected areas on the Andaman coast, a year after the disaster, to stress the need for urgent rehabilitation of mangrove swamps damaged by the tsunami.
Thanpuying Dr.Suthawan congratulated local authorities and representatives of the community in Kuraburi district, Phangna province, on the condition of the mangroves and on the replanting efforts, and encouraged people to continue them. The Government of Thailand, through the Department of Marine and Coastal Resources has conducted extensive, ecosystem assessments on Koh Phra Thong island over the years. In addition both the Department of National Parks and Marine and Coastal Resources have been involved in developing master plans for the area. For its part, IUCN is working on a master plan for the island, which incorporates studies on the environment, freshwater supply and a livelihood improvement programme. (rk)
